Somewhere between the five giant websites everyone visits and the spam at the bottom of search results, there's a better internet: tools that do one thing perfectly, rabbit holes built by obsessives, maps of things you didn't know could be mapped.

The internet already finds these. Forums, newsletters and threads asking "what's the coolest website no one knows about?" surface thousands of recommendations, but they scroll away and get buried. We hunt them down, test the links, and keep the ones that are still alive and still great.

How a site earns a spot

Every site in the directory passes three checks:

• Recommended by real people: it surfaced organically in communities of enthusiasts, not through submissions or payments.
• Tested by us: we visit every site before listing it. Dead links, login walls and bait-and-switch pages don't make it in.
• Worth a bookmark: it does something genuinely useful, delightful or strange. Currently 304 sites qualify.

Links on this site use the web's original color language: blue for places you haven't been, purple for places you have. No accounts, no tracking: your own browser keeps the score.

Nobody can pay to be listed. We don't rewrite URLs through affiliate redirects. If that ever changes, this page will say so first.
