Radiooooo: A Time Machine for the World's Music

Radiooooo is a musical time machine disguised as a world map. Click a country, pick a decade, and it plays what people there were actually listening to at that moment in history. Yugoslavia in the 70s. Mali in the 60s. Japan in the 50s. Press play and go somewhere.

It is the most efficient way to discover music that no algorithm was ever going to hand you.

What is Radiooooo?

Most music discovery works sideways. You liked this, so here is something adjacent to it. The result is a slowly narrowing corridor of things that sound like what you already know.

Radiooooo works on two axes that have nothing to do with your taste: place and time. That is the entire interface. A world map with a decade selector along the bottom. Choose Brazil, choose the 1960s, and you are listening to Brazil in the 1960s.

The collection is crowd-built and curated. People upload records from their own collections and a curation process decides what belongs. That is why it does not feel like a playlist, it feels like a very well-organized secondhand record shop run by someone with taste and a passport.

Some combinations are thin, because recording history is uneven and some decades in some places barely made it to tape. You feel those gaps as you click, and they are informative in their own quiet way.

What can you do on Radiooooo?

• Travel by map. Click any country on the globe and it becomes your station. The map lights up to show which countries have music for the decade you selected.
• Travel by decade. Slide from the early 1900s to now and hear a single country transform. Doing this with one country is the single best thing on the site.
• Pick a mood. Filter toward slow, fast or strange, depending on whether you want a soundtrack or a surprise.
• Take a taxi. Instead of choosing, let it drive: a mode that keeps moving you between places and eras on its own.
• Build a route. Select several countries and let the player wander between them.
• Contribute. If you own a record that belongs and is not there, you can submit it. The archive grows because people do.

Tips to get the most out of it

1. Pick one country and walk it through the decades. This is the move. Start Turkey in the 1930s and step forward ten years at a time. You hear a whole century of a country reinventing itself in about twenty minutes, and it will teach you more than any documentary.
2. Go where you have no reference points. Anyone can enjoy the USA in the 60s. Try Cambodia in the 60s, or Finland in the 70s, or Peru in the 50s. The point of the map is the parts of it you cannot hum.
3. Use taxi mode when you are working. Choosing is the enemy of concentration. Let it drive and just react when something lands.
4. Note down the tracks that stop you. Something will. Because much of this never made it onto mainstream streaming, if you do not write it down you may genuinely struggle to find it again.
5. Try the same decade across neighbors. Compare two countries that share a border in the same ten years. Musical borders and political ones rarely line up, and hearing that is a small thrill.
6. Let the weird filter run at night. It is a completely different site after dark.
