Sentinel Playground: Satellite Imagery of Anywhere, In Any Band You Want
Sentinel Playground opens up free Sentinel satellite imagery in a browser: pick a spot, pick a date, and switch between visual, infrared and vegetation bands.
Sentinel Playground hands you the raw output of an Earth observation program and lets you poke at it in a browser tab. Type a place name, pick a date, and you are looking at what the European Space Agency’s satellites saw over that spot. Then switch bands and see the same scene in infrared, or as a vegetation index, or with the moisture content of the ground rendered as color.
It is free, it requires nothing installed, and it makes you feel briefly like you have been issued clearance you did not earn.
What is Sentinel Playground?
The Copernicus program is the European Union’s Earth observation effort, and the Sentinel satellites are its eyes. Sentinel-2 in particular carries a multispectral imager that captures thirteen bands, from visible light through near-infrared and shortwave infrared, at resolutions down to 10 meters per pixel. It passes over most of the planet every few days.
Critically, all of that data is published under an open license. Anyone can use it, including commercially, at no cost. This is one of the more quietly remarkable public data policies in existence, and it has fed an entire ecosystem of environmental monitoring, agriculture tooling and research that would otherwise be impossible.
The problem with open satellite data has always been the interface. Getting to it traditionally means learning a catalog system, downloading multi-gigabyte scene files, and processing them in GIS software you also had to learn.
Sentinel Playground removes all of that. It is a map, a date picker, and a dropdown of band combinations. Sentinel Hub, the company behind it, handles the tiling and on-the-fly processing so you get a rendered image immediately.
The band selector is where it stops being a map viewer and starts being genuinely interesting. True color is what your eyes would see. But false-color infrared makes vegetation glow red and reveals plant health that is invisible normally. NDVI, the normalized difference vegetation index, renders greenness as a numeric index, which is how agriculture actually monitors crops. Other combinations pick out burn scars, water bodies, snow, urban surfaces, and geology.
The same patch of Earth, viewed six different ways, tells six different stories. That is the whole pitch.
What can you do with Sentinel Playground?
- Search any location on Earth. Type a place name or coordinates and the map goes there.
- Pick a date from the archive. Browse back through the acquisition history for that spot and watch how it changed.
- Switch spectral bands. True color, false color infrared, NDVI, moisture index, SWIR and others, each surfacing something the others hide.
- Filter by cloud coverage. Set a maximum cloud percentage so the date list only offers you scenes with a usable view.
- Adjust the rendering. Tune gain and gamma to pull detail out of dark or washed-out scenes.
- Compare Sentinel-2 with other data sources. The viewer offers additional datasets alongside the main optical imagery.
- Download the view. Export what is on screen as an image for a report, a slide or a post.
- Build a custom band combination. For anyone who wants to go past the presets and specify the math themselves.
Tips to get the most out of it
Set the cloud filter before you start browsing dates. Otherwise you will click through a dozen dates that are entirely white. Filtering to a low cloud percentage first turns the date list into a list of scenes that are actually worth loading.
Look at somewhere you know first. Your own town in true color, then in infrared. Recognizing the terrain is what makes the false-color views legible, and it calibrates your eye for looking at places you do not know.
Use NDVI for anything agricultural or seasonal. It reduces vegetation health to a single index and makes irrigation patterns, crop cycles and drought stress jump out of the image immediately.
Find a scene from before and after an event. Wildfires, floods, volcanic eruptions, reservoir drawdowns and glacier retreat are all dramatically visible when you flip between two dates of the same location. This is the single most compelling thing the tool does.
Remember the resolution limit. At 10 meters per pixel you are looking at fields, buildings and roads, not people or vehicles. If you expected spy-satellite imagery, this is not that, and nothing free is.
Try shortwave infrared for fires and burn scars. SWIR bands cut through smoke in a way visible light does not, which is why they show up in every satellite fire analysis you have ever seen on the news.

Sentinel-2's visible and near-infrared bands are captured at 10 meters per pixel, with other bands at 20 or 60 meters. That is far coarser than commercial high-resolution satellites, so you will not identify individual cars, but it is more than enough to see fields, fires, floods, glaciers, cities and coastlines change over time.
